Clubhouse

Letter M Events occur on intermittent Mondays at the Laughing Salamander Clubhouse and include activities beginning with the letter "M" such as:

• Movies - on a large screen in the clubhouse or in the garden on the wall
• Music - local talent and/or genre explorations
• Mixed Metaphors - two brief lectures on completely different topics followed by discussion and heavy drinking (inspired by the phenomenally popular Mixed Taste at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver)
• Minute Madness - everyone gets 60 seconds to describe themselves, their work, their hobby, their political view, their favorite book, their big idea, their mother (depending on the night)
• Major Mason's Marmalade - this one's a secret, you've just got to show up

The Space

The headquarters of Laughing Salamander adventures, events, productions and retreats is the "clubhouse" at 503 S Webber St in Urbana, Illinois. It is a personal and neighborhood workshop / garage / gallery / garden / meeting space / studio / theatre. It's about the size of a six car garage with a small garden and large driveway/patio. There's plenty of room to show movies, display artwork, host lectures and other creative activities. It is not a commercial space, and we don't advertise to the public or charge for events. We just do things we think are fun and interesting and invite people we know to participate. The purpose of this website is to provide information for this word-of-mouth network.

Philosopher's Banquet

The Philosopher's Banquet tradition began in Danby, Vermont back in 1994 and has continued through the years, most recently in Islamabad, Pakistan. It is a dinner event where each guest brings a favorite quotation. As the evening progresses, each guest draws a quotation out of the pile (not their own), reads it aloud, and shares their personal responses to the quote as an opening of discussion. Usually ending up somewhere between coffee with Socrates and Will Durant, lunch with Dorothy Parker and the Algonquin Round Table, and late night cocktails with Jon Stewart and Tina Fey, the evenings have never failed to be among the most interesting of the season for everyone involved.

Festival of F**kery

Born in 2012 as a non-lethal response to the f**kery that is life in Pakistan, the Festival of Fuckery became a legendary series of house dance parties in the F7 neighborhood of Islamabad. We plan to continue the tradition in the slightly less insane neighborhoods of Urbana.

Other Mayhem

The opportunities are endless for creative events and adventures. We are happy to explore any ideas. Traditions we hope to revive are the Canoe Trip (dating from 1992) and the Road Rally (dating from 1984). New adventures we are considering include Game of Thrones Shooting Party, Magic Island (an oasis of ancient mysteries), and Hermione's Haunted House.
