The Llama Project is a sociological art project exploring who we are and how we respond to the world. It started in 1997 when I was living in Saco, Maine. I was not able to attend an art opening/party we'd been invited to shortly after we moved there. I was disappointed because I thought it would be good way to see what kind of people lived in Portland (and who went to art galleries). So I gave Slade, my husband at the time, a list of questions to ask people in my absence. He didn't ask any of my questions, but I got the idea to ask people myself.
I tried it out first on a few friends and the responses I got were really interesting. But the project really took off the day I got stuck at a bridge going into Portland. I arrived just as the bridge was going up so I knew we would all be stuck there for at least 20 minutes. I had the cards with me, so I hopped out of my truck and went up to the cars near me and handed the people some cards and pens and asked them to help me out. What else were they going to do? Everyone filled them out and the answers were really interesting - some funny, some profound, some endearing, some disturbing. A few days later I was at the airport and got lots of responses from people waiting at the gate. I have been collecting responses from all kinds of people intermittently since then.
The most important part has been for people to fill in their responses BEFORE they see anyone else's responses, so that I get the closest thing to their real personality and state of mind. Periodically, the cards and responses will be displayed in a physical space with artistic interpretations of the various questions and/or interesting responses. If you would like to be advised about such events, we can add you to our mailing list.
The Llama Project Site: If you submit an "un-influenced" card to me (in person, by post, or through the submission form below), I will give you a password to Log In below. On the private site, you can see all the responses. You can view them by question or by type of response (funny, profound, technical, weird). You can view full scans of all the cards. You can view statistics on most common answers, percentages of types of responses, etc. The price of admission is one completed Llama Card...
